Ferrari 458 Italia Interiors and Vehicle Dynamic Assistance

The Ferrari 458 Italia replaces the F430 arising from a completely new design and innovation technologies developed from the company’s experience in Formula One. The forms and the volume of each Ferrari are the result of the integration between aerodynamics and design. In developing the 458 Italia, the styling process went hand in hand with the aerodynamic development in order to turn technical necessities into distinctive features.

The car VDA, or Vehicle Dynamic Assistance, provides technical support to the driver in assessing both vehicle status and his own performance. The VDA is activated when the manettino is at RACE, CT and CST settings and gives drivers’ information that allows them to assess the ideal operating condition for the car. An algorithm assess the car’s status (brakes, engine, tires and engine temperature) based on dynamic parameters such as lateral and longitudinal acceleration, rpm, speed, etc. The VDA alerts the driver by displaying the following shorthand: WARM UP when the components need to further warm up; GO when optimal conditions to reach maximum performance are achieved; OVER when there is overheating and cooling the components is required.

Ferrari 458 Italia: Combining Heritage With Innovations

The 458 Italia represents a farewell to the past, a leap forward into the future: the new Ferrari is so innovative that can be considered a milestone in the Maranello’s design, construction and innovation standards. As far as the name nomenclature, “458” refers to the number of cylinders and displacement, whether “Italia” pays homage to the car extraordinary Country of origin and its ability to create innovations.

Ferrari 458 Italia evokes the tradition of the historical 8-cylinders cars in the company’s history, such as the 158 F1 in 1964, the Ferrari 308 GTB in 1975 and the F40 in 1987 but, at the same time, the Ferrari 458 Italia personifies unique innovations and a leap into the future. Ferrari 458 Italia is in fact a completely new car from every point of view: engine, gearbox, chassis, suspensions, electronic controls, aerodynamics, design, instrumentation and ergonomics. All delivered with exceptional fuel consumption and emissions levels, considering its 570 hp.

Like every Ferrari, the 458 Italia guarantees unique driving pleasure and derives most of its technology from the Formula One experience. The benefits from such races heritage are immediately seen and felt when driving the new …

Ferrari 458 Italia Sound

Ferrari 458 Italia Sound

To optimize efficiency, the Ferrari 458 Italia has been designed to satisfy the dual objective of providing the driver with the most complete feedback typical from a Ferrari V8 engine whilst also guaranteeing high levels of acoustic comfort. The silencers are equipped with by-pass valves that are activated at maximum performance. At lower revs, or on a partial throttle, the exhaust gases exit from a second pair of smaller diameter tubes. The result is a Ferrari 458 Italia’s engine sound not invasive at low revs but fuller and richer at increasing performance.

Under low performance, the by-pass valves close, trapping the exhaust gases in the two silencers. At high performance and in particular under hard acceleration, the ECU responds by opening the valves and feeding all of the exhaust gases directly to the two outer tailpipes. The catalytic converter is attached to the central section of the exhaust by a flexible element which allows reducing the amount of vibrations transmitted to lighten the overall system. Similarly, the pre-catalytic converter has been eliminated, lowering overall weight and reducing back pressure whilst still complying with strict Euro 5 and LEV2 emissions legislation. Despite the more powerful engine of …

Ferrari 458 Italia Suspension, SCM and Tires

Ferrari 458 Italia Suspension, SCM and Tires

The Ferrari 458 Italia has an innovative new suspension architecture compared to the F430: the front wishbones have L shape arms while there is a multilink suspension to the rear. This innovative approach results in greater longitudinal flexibility, which improves the car’s ability to absorb bumps, reduces suspension noise, boosts transverse rigidity and consequently improve 458 Italia’s handling and responsiveness.

These characteristics combined with specific tire development further improve overall vertical rigidity for less body roll and allow the introduction of a more direct steering ratio (11.9 degrees compared to the 16.9 of the F430, resulting in a 30 percent improvement). Quicker and more responsive steering consequently provides higher safety on both road and track driving experiences. The car new suspensions also offer a better compromise between vibrational and acoustic comfort as well as sportiness.

The Magnetorheological Suspension control (SCM) was first introduced in the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and uses a fluid which viscosity instantaneously reacts to an electronically controlled magnetic field generated inside the damper. The control software adjusts the intensity of the magnetic field every millisecond, for an improved calibration and responsiveness on uneven ground. Compared to the previous version, …

Ferrari 458 Italia CCM Braking System, Chassis and New Steering Wheel

Ferrari 458 Italia CCM Braking System, Chassis and New Steering Wheel

The engineers in Maranello relied on their extensive F1 and track experience to completely redesign the 458 Italia human machine interface, providing a truly ergonomic, driver-oriented cockpit with the aim to have a machine becoming the natural extension of the driver’s body and hands. In the Ferrari 458 Italia all the vehicle main controls are now clustered directly on the steering wheel, while secondary functions are set in two satellite pods on either side of the dash. The panel ahead of the driver includes comprehensive instrument display screens which enable the driver to fully concentrate on driving and thus representing another important safety component.

The elimination of the steering column mounted stalks and the clustering of the main controls on the steering wheel allow the driver to make all the adjustments or gearshifts with his/her hands firmly on the rim. This is yet another example of a track-derived feature boasted by the 458 Italia which ensures the car to achieve maximum performances under all driving conditions. The F1 gear-shift paddles are now more functional and ergonomic as they increase in size and are also independent from steering wheel activities, …
